Pascha at St George Church

Clearwater, FL - On the Great and Holy Feast of Pascha, Orthodox Christians celebrate the life-giving Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This feast of feasts is the most significant day in the life of the Church. It is a celebration of the defeat of death, as neither death itself nor the power of the grave could hold our Savior captive. In this victory that came through the Cross, Christ broke the bondage of sin, and through faith offers us restoration, transformation, and eternal life( excerpt from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America web page).

Divine Liturgy was served by our parish priest Fr. Dragan Zaric and retired parish priest Fr. Milan Stojanovich. The church service was inspirational and all parishioners in attendance were so attentive taking in every word of the Divine Liturgy. The children were all dressed in their Sunday best for Easter. Families brought their Easter baskets from home to be blessed during Divine Liturgy. The baskets were many and each one was so beautiful. One little boy caught my eye because every time a family brought their basket to the front to the church to put in amongst all the other baskets to be blessed he would examine them closely and afterwards he would get this wonderful smile on his face.

After Divine Liturgy lunch was served in the hall prepared by our hard working Kolo sisters and Chef Sinisa. The lunch was delicious and it was wonderful visiting with friends, family, Kumovi and even making some new friends.

Fr. Dragan gathered the children to participate in some fun and games involving the Easter egg. A game of ‘tucanje’, which involves the children cracking their eggs against each other – top to top, and bottom to bottom. This tradition also involves competition, as the one whose egg doesn’t break is believed to be blessed by good luck. Competitions are also organized across Serbia, with the most popular being held in the town of Mokrin in the Vojvodina region where hundreds gather to find out whose egg is the strongest. While we didn't have hundreds gathered the children had so much fun upholding this tradition of "tucanje"
