What is an icon? Is it just a mere representation of a feast or a saint? Or is it an occasion for an encounter with the ever living and ever vibrant heavenly reality? Every Orthodox Christian understands that within and through an icon, we meet a saint or feel the blessed energies of the feast day to which an icon is dedicated. The way we respond to the preciousness of the icons tells us something about our spiritual life and our relationship with God and his saints. This is why cherishing icons and respecting their spiritual value, in addition to the artistic, is imperative for us Orthodox.
The community of the Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Church in Steubenville, possesses two icons that are very precious, both in the sense of art and in the sense of their comforting heavenly presence. Those two icons are the icon of the Holy Resurrection and the icon of the Mother of God. Both of these icons were masterfully painted by Fr. Vojislav Bilbija who is known world-wide for being a very talented and respected priest. The two mentioned icons painted by Fr. Vojislav, reached the point where their restoration was necessary. As a loving and caring community which understood that the icons should be restored to their former brilliance, the Holy Resurrection community sent these icons to be restored to the talented painter and conservator Olga Nikolic Litwin in New York City, who restores, among all else, icons for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After Olga’s impressive work, the icons are now back at their home, Holy Resurrection Church, and are shining again! In this time of pandemic, the icon of the Holy Resurrection, gives us hope that all our churches, after this pandemic is over, will shine with the light of the Holy Resurrection even more brightly! The Mother of God icon, with Christ in her hands, reminds us all of her motherly love for our whole Diocese and for the world.
Ultimately, the restoration of these icons testifies to our appreciation of who we are. The Serbian Church and its art always stood out as a prime example of how God and His Saints are to be honored and painted. Throughout the history of our art and spirituality, we have shown that our participation in God’s divine energies is something that is forever fresh, forever new and bright! We manifested this, and continue to manifest it, through caring for our spirituality, our art, and our cultural heritage.
May God accept our care for His holy images as a well pleasing sacrifice and bless us all according to the words of the liturgy. For indeed, He blesses those who love the beauty of His house!
Fr Stefan Doric
