On Sunday, January 4th, 2025, our Holy Trinity Cathedral Winter Day Camp was filled with warmth, joy, and meaningful tradition as we gathered to celebrate Serbian Father’s Day - Oci/Očevi, a beloved Serbian Orthodox holiday honoring fathers. In the spirit of the day, the children joyfully participated in the traditional tying of the fathers, learning through laughter and symbolism about love, responsibility, gratitude, and the strong bonds that hold families together.
The day continued with engaging camp activities and crafts, where little hands created with care and imagination. Each project carried a deeper meaning, connecting creativity with faith and tradition, and allowing the children to express what they were learning in their own unique ways.
A special highlight was our time of learning with Father Nebojša, who welcomed the children’s curiosity through an open and thoughtful Q&A session. With warmth and patience, he guided them through lessons on the Nativity and the importance of confession, helping them understand faith not just as a set of teachings, but as a living, loving relationship with God. Following the religious education class, many of the children partook in the Holy Mystery of Confession for the first time.
Nature added its own magic to the day as the children enjoyed playing in the snow, their laughter echoing through the church grounds. Together, they also took part in the beautiful tradition of decorating the Yule Log - Badnjak and making bundles, learning the meaning behind each step and how these customs prepare our hearts for Christ’s birth.
It was truly an outstanding day - one filled with faith, tradition, learning, and pure joy. Surrounded by amazing children and supported by a beautiful, welcoming church community, we were reminded how precious these moments are and how deeply rooted our traditions become when they are lived together, with love.
