On the morning of Holy and Great Thursday, April 9, 2026, His Grace Bishop of Washington–New York and Eastern America Kyr Irinej, alumnus and member of the Board of Trustees, celebrated the Vesperal Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great in the Three Holy Hierarchs Chapel at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in Yonkers, New York. Gathered in the solemn and prayerful atmosphere of this sacred day, the faithful and seminarians alike were led into the profound mystery of the beginning of our Lord’s saving Passion.

In his homily, deeply reflective of this mystical-liturgical context, His Grace described the Liturgy of Holy Thursday as standing before the very Gates of Beauty, through which is revealed the mysterious entrance into the New Pascha, and the Great Lent as the spiritual journey of the Church towards it. Beginning with the preparatory weeks before Great Lent, the faithful are reminded that the Church first calls us to self-knowledge—answering the essential question: ‘Who am I?’ Through the Gospel readings of those weeks, we are led along a path of desire to see Christ, humility, and repentance, returning from the “far country” of sin.

As the Great Fast unfolds, this question gives way to another: ‘Who is Christ?’ In the Sunday Gospels of Lent, the Lord gradually reveals Himself—through His words and deeds—as the One who forgives sins, grants healing, and raises the dead. This revelation reaches its fulfillment in the raising of Lazarus and Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem, where He is proclaimed King, not in earthly glory, but in the humility that leads to the Cross,  and His resurrection from the dead. Furthermore, His Grace emphasized that the faithful are brought to the culmination of this journey: not only to know Christ, but also to receive Him. In the institution of the Holy Eucharist, the Lord fulfills His promise to remain with His people, offering His very Body and Blood “for the life of the world” (Jn. 6:51). Thus, we are called not only to remember past events, but to “remember the future”—to live even now in the reality of His abiding presence, for Christ Himself said: “Behold, I am with you always, even unto the end of the age” (Matt, 28:20).

His Grace further reflected on the cosmic and salvific dimension of this mystery, drawing a parallel between the creation of Eve from the side of Adam and the birth of the Church from the pierced side of Christ by St. Epiphanios of Cyprus. In this way, the Church is revealed as His Body and Bride, encompassing and transfiguring all creation through His sacrifice. By participation in the Holy Mysteries, the faithful are sent forth to continue their journey through the saving events of the Passion, called to unite themselves with Christ in His suffering, death, and Resurrection. For by entering into death—into that which He did not create—Christ has destroyed it, granting life and salvation to the world. Concluding his homily, His Grace exhorted all present to open their hearts to the depth of this sacred mystery, that they may walk faithfully from repentance to the Cross, and from the Cross to the radiant joy of the Resurrection­—the New Pascha.

На дан Светог и Великог Четвртка, 9. априла 2026. године, Његово Преосвештенство Епископ вашингтонско-њујоршки и источноамерички Господин Иринеј, некадашњи студент, а сада члан Повереништва Академије, служио је Свету архијерејску Литургију Светог Василија Великог у капели Света Три Јерарха на Православној Богословској Академији Светог Владимира у Јонкерсу, Њујорк. Сабрани у свечаној и молитвеној атмосфери овог светог дана, верни народ и полазници Академије били су уведени у велику и свету тајну спасоносних страдања Господњих.

У својој беседи, Његово Преосвештенство је описао Литургију Великог Четвртак као стајање на самим Вратима Лепоте, кроз која се открива тајанствени улазак у Нову Пасху, а Велики Пост као духовни пут Цркве према Њој. Полазећи од припремних недеља пред Велики пост, верни су опоменути да Црква најпре позива на самоспознају — одговарајући на питање: „Ко сам ја?“ Кроз јеванђелска читања тих недеља, човек се води путем жеље, смирења и покајања, враћајући се из „далеке земље“ греха.

Кроз ток Великог Поста, ово питање уступа место другом: „Ко је Христос?“ У недељним јеванђељима поста, Господ се постепено открива — кроз своје речи и дела — као Онај који опрашта грехе, дарује исцељење и васкрсава мртве. Ово откривење достиже свој врхунац у васкрсењу Лазара и Христовом уласку у Јерусалим, приликом ког је Он поздрављен као Цар, не због земаљске славе, већ смирења које води ка Крсту и Његово Васкрсење из мртвих Такође, верни се доводе до врхунца овог пута: не само да упознају Христа, већ да Га и приме, нагалсио је владика. У установљењу Свете Евхаристије, Господ испуњава своје обећање да ће остати са својим народом, дарујући своје Тело и Крв „за живот света“ (Јн. 6:51). Тако смо позвани не само да се сећамо прошлих догађаја, већ да се „сећамо будућности“ — да већ сада живимо у стварности Његовог непрестаног присуства, јер Он Сам је рако: „Ево, ја сам с вама у све дане до свршетка века“ (Мат. 28:20).

Његово Преосвештенство је даље говорио о космичкој и спасоносној димензији ове тајне, повлачећи паралелу између стварања Еве из Адамовог ребра и рађања Цркве из прободеног Христовог ребра према учењу Св. Епифанија кипарског. На тај начин, Црква се открива као Његово Тело и Невеста, која обухвата и преображава целокупну творевину кроз Његову жртву. Учешћем у Светим Тајнама Христовим, верни су послати да наставе свој пут кроз спасоносне догађаје Његовог Страдања, позвани да се сједине са Христом у Његовим патњама, смрти и Васкрсењу. Јер улазећи у смрт — у оно што Он није створио — Христос ју је уништио, дарујући живот и спасење свету. Завршавајући беседу, владика је све присутне позвао да отворе своја срца дубини ове свете тајне, како би верно ходили од покајања ка Крсту, и од Крста ка светлој радости Васкрсења — Нове Пасхе.
