HIERARCHICAL DIVINE LITURGY IN PATERSON, NJ

On Sunday, July 5, 2026, the parish community of the Church of St. John the Baptist in Paterson gathered for the celebration of the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, celebrated by their Archpastor, His Grace Bishop Irinej of Washington, New York, and Eastern America. Concelebrating with His Grace were Protopresbyter-Stavrophor Djokan Majstorovic and Deacon Vladimir Srbljak.

United in prayer and glorifying God, the faithful participated in the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy with peace, reverence, and spiritual attentiveness. Following the reading of the Holy Gospel, the congregation prayerfully listened to the Archpastoral homily delivered by Bishop Irinej.

Drawing from the Gospel reading, His Grace spoke about the essential spiritual struggle that takes place within the heart of every person. Reflecting on the Gospel account in which, by God's permission, the demons departed from the Gadarene demoniacs and entered a herd of swine that subsequently rushed into the sea, the Bishop emphasized that this passage reveals the destructive power of evil and shows how vulnerable a person becomes when separated from God.

Continuing his homily, His Grace explained that every sin—whether committed knowingly or unknowingly—becomes a crack, a "door," through which evil seeks entrance into the human heart. For this reason, he urged everyone to guard "the cell of the soul"—the inner chamber of the heart where one encounters God. As Christians, we are called to spiritual vigilance, repentance, and a continual return to Christ, for He alone casts out darkness, and His presence within our hearts grants true freedom.

Speaking further about the spiritual life, the Bishop reflected on the gift of freedom bestowed upon humanity by God. In His immeasurable love, God never violates the freedom He has given to mankind. Yet freedom without discipline, spiritual order, and a life rooted in the Gospel easily descends into chaos. Believing that he may do whatever he desires, a person often unknowingly opens the doors of the soul to sin and the passions. As the Holy Apostle Paul reminds us: "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful" (1 Corinthians 10:23).

From this, His Grace naturally led to the message that authentic freedom is not found in the absence of limitations, but in one's ability to freely choose the good. Only such freedom leads to salvation and therefore always requires ascetic struggle, responsibility, and love for God and neighbor.

Continuing this thought, Bishop Irinej emphasized that faith can endure even when a person is deprived of outward freedom. One who is imprisoned for Christ's sake, who suffers for the sake of His Holy Name, is not deprived of true freedom, for freedom does not depend upon the walls that surround a person but upon Christ dwelling within the heart.

As a living witness to this truth, His Grace pointed to St. Moses the Black, once a robber and a man deeply immersed in sin, who through sincere repentance became one of the greatest ascetics of the Egyptian desert. His famous counsel, "Return to your cell, and your cell will teach you everything," is not merely monastic advice but a guide for every Christian. It is precisely in the silence of the heart, in prayer, repentance, and the unceasing struggle against one's passions that a person gradually acquires inner peace and finds true freedom in Christ.

Bringing his homily to its conclusion, the Bishop emphasized one of its central themes: "Faith can endure without external freedom, but freedom cannot endure without faith." Only freedom sanctified by faith becomes a path to salvation and communion with God. We are therefore called to preserve our holy Orthodox faith with love, the fear of God, and holy zeal, for it is the very foundation of authentic freedom.

In a spirit of thanksgiving to God, today's liturgical gathering was made especially joyful as the parish also marked the fifth anniversary of Deacon Vladimir Srbljak's ordination to the Holy Diaconate. Prayers of thanksgiving were offered for his continued ministry in Christ's Holy Church, and special gratitude was expressed to His Grace Bishop Irinej, through whose blessing Fr. Vladimir and his family were granted the privilege of serving God and His Holy Church. May the Lord strengthen his diaconal ministry for many years to come, that he may continue to serve "with the fear of God, faith, and love," for the spiritual benefit of his family and the faithful of St. John the Baptist Parish.

Following the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, the joy of the day's celebration continued in the parish hall with a fasting agape meal, where the fellowship of the faithful continued in a spirit of Christian love, gratitude, and brotherly fellowship.

May the words of today's Holy Gospel and the Archpastoral homily remain in our hearts, so that we may never cease to safeguard the Orthodox faith, keep watch over "the cell of our souls," and choose Christ alone in every circumstance of life.

СВЕТА АРХИЈЕРЕЈСКА ЛИТУРГИЈА У ПАТЕРСОНУ, ЊУ ЏЕРЗИ

У недељу, 5. јула 2026. године, парохијска заједница храма Светог Јована Крститеља у Патерсону сабрала се на Светој Архијерејској Литургији око свога архипастира, Његовог Преосвештенства Епископа вашингтонско-њујоршког и источноамеричког г. Иринеја, који је началствовао Светом Архијерејском Литургијом уз саслужење протојереја-ставрофора Ђокана Мајсторовића и ђакона Владимира Србљака.

Верни народ је, сједињен у заједничкој молитви и славословљу Господу, у миру и духовној сабраности учествовао у Светој Архијерејској Литургији. Након прочитаног Светог Јеванђеља, народ је са пажњом слушао архипастирску беседу Владике Иринеја.

Полазећи од прочитаног Јеванђеља, Владика је указао на суштинску духовну борбу која се води у срцу сваког човека. Осврнувши се на догађај у коме су демони, по Божјем допуштењу, изашли из гадаринских бесомучника и ушли у крдо свиња, које се потом сурвало у море, нагласио је да овај јеванђељски догађај открива разорну силу зла и показује колико је човек, када се удаљи од Бога, изложен његовом дејству.

Настављајући, Владика је истакао да сваки свесно или несвесно учињени грех постаје пукотина – „врата“ кроз која зло покушава да уђе у наше срце. Зато је нагласио да свако од нас треба да чува „келију своје душе“ и да смо, као хришћани, позвани на духовну будност, покајање и непрестано враћање Христу, јер једино Он истерује таму, а Његово присуство у нашим срцима дарује истинску слободу.

Говорећи даље о духовном животу, Преосвећени Владика се посебно осврнуо на слободу коју је Господ подарио човеку. Бог, из неизмерне љубави, поштује људску слободну вољу и никада је не нарушава. Ипак, слобода без дисциплине, без духовног поретка и живота по Јеванђељу, лако прераста у хаос. Тада човек, често несвесно, мислећи да може све, отвара врата своје душе греху и страстима. Свети Апостол Павле нас зато опомиње: „Све ми је дозвољено, али ми није све на корист“ (1 Коринћанима 10:23).

Из те мисли природно је произашла и порука да истинска слобода није у одсуству ограничења, већ у способности човека да слободно изабере добро. Само таква слобода човека води ка спасењу и зато она увек подразумева подвиг, одговорност и љубав према Богу и ближњем.

Надовезујући се на то, Владика је нагласио да вера може да опстане и онда када је човек лишен спољашње слободе. Онај који је утамничен Христа ради, који страда за Име Господње, није лишен слободе, јер она не зависи од зидова који га окружују, већ од Христа који живи у човековом срцу.

Као сведочанство те истине, Владика је навео Св. Мојсија Мурина, некадашњег разбојника и човека огрезлог у злим делима, а који је кроз искрено покајање постао један од највећих подвижника египатске пустиње. Његове речи: „Врати се у своју келију, и келија ће те свему научити“, нису само монашки савет, већ путоказ сваком хришћанину. Управо у тишини срца, молитви, покајању и непрестаној борби са сопственим страстима, човек постепено стиче унутрашњи мир и проналази истинску слободу у Христу.

Заокружујући своју беседу, Владика је нагласио једну од њених кључних мисли: „Вера може да опстане и без спољашње слободе, али слобода не може опстати без вере.” Само слобода која је освећена вером постаје пут ка спасењу и заједници са Богом. Позвани смо, зато, да са љубављу, страхом Божијим и светом ревношћу чувамо своју свету православну веру, као темељ истинске слободе.

У духу благодарности Богу, данашње литургијско сабрање било је посебно радосно и због обележавања пете годишњице рукоположења ђакона Владимира Србљака. Са благодарношћу Богу узнели смо молитве за његово даље служење Светој Цркви, а посебну захвалност упутили Његовом Преосвештенству Епископу Иринеју, који је удостојио оца Владимира и његову породицу благослова да служе Богу и Његовој Светој Цркви. Нека Господ укрепи његово ђаконско служење, да га још дуго приноси„ “са страхом Божијим, вером и љубављу“, на духовну корист своје породице и верних парохије Св. Јована Крститеља.

По завршетку Свете Литургије, литургијска радост настављена је у црквеној сали уз трпезу љубави, где се братско заједништво наставило у духу хришћанске љубави и благодарности.

Нека речи данашњег Јеванђеља и архипастирске поуке остану урезане у нашим срцима, да никада не престанемо да чувамо веру, бдимо над „келијом своје душе“ и у свакој животној прилици бирамо само Христа!
