Arbor Day.

Tree Planting Day - Atlanta

“The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness” (Psalm 24,1; I Corinth. 10,26).

In Feburary of 2019, the church school of Saints Peter and Paul organized the planting of trees on their church property.

While preparing for this event, the parish discovered that the first such event was organized in Spain back as far back as 1594, and in the United States as early as 1872, given the name “Arbor Day”

Before the church school began planting their trees, Fr. Miladin gathered the children to discuss the importance of taking care of the environment, including activities such as planting of trees.  He offered their activity, tree planting, as one way that they can contribute to protecting the great gift of creation that God has granted us.  Further, Fr. Miladin stressed the importance of recognizing all things that we see around us are the work of God – and preserving nature, nurturing and taking care of God's creations, are part of our good stewardship of the earth.  The Ss. Peter and Paul church school and youth program, once again, showed their young children a creative way to connect their everyday lives with their Orthodox Christian faith.

By the end of the day, the church school children were taught that we have moral obligation to do everything that is in our power, and according to the words spoken by St. Paul (I Cor. 10.23), to care for this world. Humans are the ones that have the ability to understand nature and as such it falls on us to realize that we are not the owners, but rather the caretakes, of God's creations - and all that we inherited we need to preserve for the next generation and so on.

During this event, the church school and participants planted 40 trees, including oaks, limes and chestnuts.
