COMMUNIQUÉ

Diocese of Eastern America

The Serbian Orthodox Church

In regard to the recently published interview entitled, “If Serbia will not raise a monument to Pupin, I will do it”, given to the Serbian daily newspaper “Politika” on January 20th, 2020 by Ms. Radmila Milentijevic of New York City. In the interest of accurately informing all domestic and international media outlets, and in accordance with the Law on public information and the right of publishing a refutation, the Diocese of Eastern America issues the following:

STATEMENT

In the interview published on January 20, 2020 by the daily newspaper, “Politika”, in which Ms. Radmila Milentijevic devoted attention to the life and person of Serbian scientist, Mihajlo Pupin. In answer to a question posed by the journalist, “What is the current disposition in our Diaspora?”, Ms. Milentijevic did, out of context with the theme of the interview, respond with a list of accusations against the person of His Grace, the Bishop of Eastern America, Kyr Irinej, and His Archpastoral service on the Cathedra of the Diocese of Eastern America.

In response to the cited question of the journalist, the above named presented unsubstantiated allegations that Bishop Irinej “personally ravaged the Serbian spiritual nucleus in New York City”. In regard to this, we once again remind the public that in the year 2016, on the very day of the Feast of Christ’s Resurrection, thus prior to the arrival of Bishop Irinej to the Cathedra of the Diocese of Eastern America, an inextinguishable conflagration almost entirely destroyed the Cathedral Church of St. Sava in New York City, inflicting a colossal trauma upon the Serbian Orthodox community in New York. Additionally, the structure which was the parish home, i.e., church hall, was no longer in a condition that it could be further utilized for the purpose of assemblage by the faithful of the New York City community. For it had deteriorated to a significant degree due to the erosion of time. Precisely due to this, the Bishop, apprehending the entire situation in the parish, and in accordance with the Constitution of the Church, appointed a Parish Trusteeship, composed of experts from various fields in order to, proceed with the greatest possible vigilance, restore not only the church, but also the living Christian community. Today, thanks be to God, the number of parishioners, increases regularly. Unfortunately this, and similar such accusations, which are presented by Ms. Milentijevic are not novelties, for the above named asserted such accusations against other bishops, and also priests, who served at the altar of the Cathedral Church in New York City.

Accordingly, the Diocese of Eastern America finds it necessary, for the purpose of accurately informing both domestic and international media, to present the specifics of actual facts in regards to the Episcopal Residence, which is mentioned by Ms. Milentijevic in her interview with the paper, “Politika”. The current residence of the Diocese of Eastern America was purchased from the sale of the former residence, and diocesan funds. The accusations that the Bishop “dissolved the parish of New York and squandered large sums of money” are entirely false. All resources designated for the renovation of the Cathedral Church in New York City, and the New York City community in general, have been utilized exclusively for the renewal of the church and the maintenance of the parish.

We emphasize the fact that the residence, by virtue of the generosity of its previous owner, was purchased at almost half of its value, which is a significant accomplishment that is well appreciated by all who know the standards of the real estate market of New York City. Suffice it to say that any average apartment in the City of New York requires more funds than that with which the Diocesan Residence was purchased. In addition, the former owners were particularly generous when they realized that their former residence would become the diocesan center of a Church. In a wonderful gesture of magnanimity, they donated to the Diocese a significant portion of the antique furniture currently in the residence. Likewise, Bishop Irinej, decided to donate to the Diocese his valuable personal art collection, accumulated over many years. As a result of all the above cited, the Diocese of Eastern America prides itself that it, once again, possess a dignified and representative Diocesan Center, where it can offer hospitality to its faithful, clergy and monastics, eminent guests and all who knock at its doors and to do so without any feelings of embarrassment.

The Residence of the Diocese of Eastern America is located in the city of New Rochelle, a suburb of New York City, in an edifice built in 1926. It is not a mansion, but precisely a house with additionally constructed rooms, which served the needs of its previous owners; it does not, nor ever has, contained a pool. It is not only a residence, but also the Diocesan Center of the Diocese of Eastern America, with all of its necessary offices. Precisely because of its specific and spacious interior, the residence qualified as a perfect candidate for housing the Diocesan Residence and Diocesan Center for multiple reasons.

The first, and most important reason, is the conscientious intention and official obligation to execute the decision of the Holy Assembly of Bishops from May 2011, brought forth five years prior to the enthronement on the Cathedra of the Bishops of Eastern America, Kyr Irinej, in which it was mandated to relocate the residence of the Diocese of Eastern America from the town of Mars, Pennsylvania, to either New York City or Washington, D.C.

Equally, a vital reason for the relocation of the Diocesan Center to New Rochelle involved the paying of property taxes. Thanks to the conscious leadership and experience of the members of Diocesan Council, led by the Bishop, the tremendous advantage and significance of owning this edifice was realized. As opposed to the former residence in the State of New Jersey, for which the Diocese had to dedicate a significant sum of money for the paying of annual taxes, as it also had to do on the residences in Pennsylvania, now the Diocese of Eastern America pays no property taxes.

The third reason is that the current location of the Diocesan Residence possess an ideally situated room for a diocesan chapel, in which daily divine services will be celebrated and which will, thanks to this fact, be able to receive a significant number of faithful.

A significant part of the Residence is occupied by the offices of the Bishop, diocesan deacons and staff. As in all other diocesan centers and residences of our Church, this Diocesan Center also possess its library, located throughout five rooms of the edifice. The Diocese is gradually realizing the project of the complete digitalization of its library and, parallel with this, the registration of the Diocesan Archives, which is located in the spacious loft of the Residence.

A part of the Residence is dedicated to the diocesan museum and bookstore, in whose conformation is included a depository with items necessary for supplying our church-school communities and monasteries of the Diocese of Eastern America. The Residence possess a formal dining room as well as reception areas for receiving guests, located in the central section of the edifice. The diocesan dormitory includes sleeping quarters, designed to serve as overnight accommodation for guests visiting the Diocese.

All of the cited segments located in the edifice have only one purpose: namely, the accomplishment of the ecclesial, educational and church-diplomatic mission in the eastern region of the American continent, which the Diocese of Eastern America encompasses. They serve no other purpose except those cited, and they are a long term pledge toward the blessed future of all the Orthodox faithful, members of the Diocese of Eastern America, of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The Diocese of Eastern America deeply regrets the currently established media practice of publicly reporting unsubstantiated and unfounded facts, as well as the inescapable consequence that many faithful believers are scandalized by their spurious content.
