FIVE MEMBERS OF THE U.S. CONGRESS PROPOSE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF SERBIAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

Serbia's Ambassador to Washington, Dragan Sutanovac, told Newsmax Balkans that the designation of February as Serbian-American Heritage Month would be of great importance for the Serbian community in the United States, as it would provide an opportunity to showcase its culture, traditions, and contributions to American society.

Five members of the U.S. Congress have introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives proposing that February be designated as Serbian-American Heritage Month, which Newsmax Balkans published on its website on Tuesday, July 28.

The initiative was jointly supported by Republicans and Democrats and recognizes the history, culture, and contributions of Americans of Serbian descent to the development of the United States.

The resolution provides an overview of all significant events that have taken place over the years, decades, and centuries in the United States and that are connected with the Serbian community and people who have identified as Serbs.

It also mentions the great scientist Nikola Tesla, as well as Operation Halyard, the major World War II rescue operation that took place in this region, while calling on all U.S. citizens to mark each February in the years ahead as a month dedicated to Serbian culture and heritage in the United States.

Dragan Sutanovac, Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to Washington, emphasized in an interview with Newsmax Balkans that significant efforts by Serbian diplomacy in the U.S. capital had been made to ensure that this resolution reached the U.S. Congress, which he confirmed to the television network.

"When we determined that, despite their enormous contribution to American society and everything that America represents today, Serbs in the United States had never had a month dedicated to their heritage, we formed a special team within the embassy. With great commitment and dedication, we began working on this initiative, primarily through discussions with members of Congress who would support and introduce a resolution designating February as Serbian-American Heritage Month", Sutanovac said.

He stressed that, following months of work, the resolution designating February as Serbian-American Heritage Month had entered the legislative process before the U.S. Congress.

Sutanovac noted that the efforts of the Serbian Embassy, as well as the support of the co-chairs of the Serbian Caucus in Congress, Congressman Emanuel Cleaver and Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, contributed to this achievement.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESOLUTION

The adoption of this resolution will provide Serbs in the United States with a dedicated month to present their culture, traditions, and contributions to American society.

All U.S. citizens and anyone interested in participating will be able to join the observance of Serbian-American Heritage Month through programs dedicated to Serbian heritage, as envisaged by the resolution itself.

It is also important to emphasize that this resolution contributes to strengthening Serbian influence in the United States.

SERBIAN CAUCUS STRENGTHENED BY FOUR NEW MEMBERS

Ambassador Sutanovac particularly highlighted that the Serbian Caucus in the U.S. Congress was strengthened this year by four new members, further confirming the growing support and visibility of Serbian interests in the United States.

"Over the past year, four new members of Congress joined the Serbian Caucus in the U.S. Congress", said the Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to Washington.

According to him, their contribution to the Serbian-American Heritage resolution is significant, while the strengthening of the Serbian Caucus demonstrates that Serbia today has greater influence and a stronger standing in American society, both among members of Congress and within the administration.

"In the future, we expect more members of Congress to join our caucus, and we have a number of additional activities planned that will be positive surprises both for citizens in Serbia and for our people in America", Sutanovac concluded.

His Grace Bishop Irinej of Washington-New York and Eastern America noted: We are privileged that the month of February was designated as Serbian-America Heritage Month, given that it is the month in which Serbia celebrates its Statehood Day, on the Feast of the Meeting of the Lord - Sretenje 2/15 February), when in 1804 the First Serbian Uprising evolved into a revolution to free Serbia from Ottoman occupation. Then, again on Sretenje, in 1835, the first Serbian modern constitution, known as the “Sretenje Constitution” was adopted.

ПЕТ ЧЛАНОВА АМЕРИЧКОГ КОНГРЕСА ПРЕДЛОЖИЛО УСПОСТАВЉАЊЕ МЕСЕЦА СРПСКО-АМЕРИЧКОГ НАСЛЕЂА

Амбасадор Србије у Вашингтону Драган Шутановац рекао је за Newsmax Balkans да би проглашење фебруара за месец српско-америчког наслеђа имало велики значај за српску заједницу у САД, јер би омогућило да се представе њена култура, традиција и допринос америчком друштву.

Пет чланова америчког Конгреса поднело је у Представничком дому резолуцију којом се предлаже да фебруар буде проглашен за Месец српско-америчког наслеђа. Реч је о иницијативи коју су заједнички подржали републиканци и демократе, а којом се одаје признање историји, култури и доприносу Американаца српског порекла развоју Сједињених Америчких Држава.

Она пружа преглед свих важних информација о догађајима који су се кроз године, деценије и векове одвијали на подручју Сједињених Америчких Држава, а који су се односили на српску заједницу и људе који су се изјашњавали као Срби.

Драган Шутановац, амбасадор Републике Србије у Вашингтону, истакао је у разговору за Newsmax Балканс да су велики напори српске дипломатије у главном граду Америке уложени како би управо ова резолуција доспела до америчког конгреса, и то је потврдио за нашу телевизију.

„Кад смо утврдили да, упркос огромном доприносу америчком друштву и свему ономе што Америка данас представља, Срби у САД никада нису имали месец посвећен свом наслеђу, формирали смо посебан тим у оквиру амбасаде. Са великим ангажовањем и посвећеношћу приступили смо раду на овој иницијативи, пре свега кроз разговоре са конгресменима који би подржали и предложили резолуцију којом би фебруар био проглашен месецом српско-америчког наслеђа", рекао је Шутановац.

Он је нагласио да је после вишемесечног рада, резолуција о проглашењу фебруара за месец српско-америчког наслеђа ушла у процедуру пред америчким Конгресом.

Шутановац је навео да су томе допринели рад амбасаде Србије, као и подршка копредседника Српског кокуса у Конгресу, господина Емануела Кливера и госпође Клаудије Тени.

ЗНАЧАЈ РЕЗОЛУЦИЈЕ

Усвајањем ове резолуције Срби у Сједињеним Америчким Државама добиће прилику да кроз посебан месец представе своју културу, традицију и допринос који су дали америчком друштву.

Обележавању месеца српско-америчког наслеђа моћи ће да се придруже сви грађани Америке и сви који желе да учествују у програмима посвећеним српској баштини, што је и предвиђено самом резолуцијом.

Важно је истаћи и да ова резолуција доприноси јачању српског утицаја у Сједињеним Америчким Државама.

СРПСКИ КОКУС ОСНАЖЕН СА ЧЕТИРИ НОВА ЧЛАНА

Амбасадор Шутановац посебно је нагласио да је Српски кокус у америчком Конгресу ове године ојачан за четири нова члана, што додатно потврђује раст подршке и видљивости српских интереса у САД.

„Током претходне године четири нова конгресмена ушла у Српски кокус у америчком Конгресу", рекао је амбасадор Републике Србије у Вашингтону.

Према његовим речима, њихов допринос резолуцији о српско-америчком наслеђу је значајан, а јачање Српског кокуса показује да Србија данас има већи утицај и углед у америчком друштву, како међу конгресменима, тако и у администрацији.

„У перспективи очекујемо да ће још конгресмена приступити нашем кокусу, а имамо још низ активности које ће бити позитивна изненађења како за грађане у Србији, тако и за наше људе у Америци", закључио је Шутановац.

Његово Преосвештенство Епископ вашингтонско-њујоршки и источноамерички г. Иринеј је истакао:

„Посебна је част што је месец фебруар проглашен за Месец српско-америчког наслеђа, будући да Србија управо у том месецу прославља свој Дан државности, на празник Сретења Господњег (2/15. фебруар). Тога дана 1804. године Први српски устанак прерастао је у револуцију за ослобођење Србије од османске власти. Такође, на Сретење 1835. године донет је први модерни устав Србије, познат као Сретењски устав.

Како је говорио велики Свети владика Николај Велимировић: „Историјо, реци ми ко си ти, да бих знао ко сам ја.“
